In 2026, the United States will reach a defining historical landmark: 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the document that ignited the birth of a nation committed to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This semiquincentennial moment invites not only remembrance, but recalibration—an opportunity to examine how the American experiment has matured through revolution, conflict, reform, and renewal over two and a half centuries.
To guide this nationwide reflection, Congress created the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission through Public Law 114-196. The Commission’s charge is expansive yet intentional: to inspire Americans to engage with their shared past, interpret the present with discernment, and prepare thoughtfully for the future. Rather than a single anniversary event, the Semiquincentennial is envisioned as a sustained national conversation.
Within this broader effort, America 250 NC serves as North Carolina’s official commemoration, spotlighting the state’s indispensable contributions to the founding and evolution of the United States. Appointed by Governor Cooper, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) leads this initiative, coordinating strategy, partnerships, and programming across the state.
A defining strength of America 250 NC lies in its collaborative structure. DNCR works alongside historical organizations, museums, educational institutions, tribal nations, community groups, municipalities, and federal partners. This network ensures that the commemoration is not singular in voice or narrow in scope. Instead, it reflects the complexity of North Carolina’s past—acknowledging triumphs, tensions, contradictions, and underrepresented narratives.
Equally important is the program’s emphasis on public participation. America 250 NC is designed not merely as a retrospective display of history, but as an invitation for communities to engage actively. Schools, nonprofits, cultural institutions, and local governments are encouraged to develop their own programs aligned with the initiative’s guiding themes. To support this work, the America 250 NC Planning Guide provides practical frameworks, interpretive themes, engagement ideas, and access to educational and historical resources.
The commemoration officially began on April 12, 2024, marking the 249th anniversary of the Halifax Resolves—North Carolina’s pivotal step toward independence. Activities will peak in 2026 and continue through 2033, allowing time to fully explore the state’s Revolutionary-era legacy and its long-term impact. Planned efforts include curriculum development, public lectures, digital archives, traveling and permanent exhibitions, storytelling projects, and community-centered commemorative events.
As America 250 NC evolves, programs will expand and adapt, reflecting new research, community input, and emerging perspectives. The ultimate goal is not celebration alone, but empowerment—encouraging North Carolinians to see themselves within the arc of history, to understand how the past shapes the present, and to recognize their role in shaping the nation’s future.
